He will take on 9 European up-and-coming talents. 39 designers will take part in the regional finals on the four remaining continents.

The first part of the competition is a European final in June 2013. In Milan, Mattijs van Bergen will show six sketches and one executed outfit in Merino wool to an international panel of judges. They will choose one European winner, who will receive the prize of 50.000 Australian Dollars.

The worldwide final will take place in January 2014. The best collection will be honoured with the International Woolmark Prize, 100.000 Australian Dollars and sales in leading warehouses such as Harvey Nichols (London), Joyce (China) and David Jones (Australia).

Van Bergen: “I am honoured to be nominated for the Woolmark Prize and to compete against the strong selection of designers. It has meant a lot to earlier winners including Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld, I can only hope for the same kind of luck!”

Van Bergen looks forward to using Merino wool in his idiom of pleated textures and metallics. The six looks that Mattijs van Bergen will create especially for the final are also part of his autumn/winter 2014-2015 collection.
