Aldo Bakker & Georg Jensen (Milan)

Aldo Bakker's new work for Georg Jensen will be presented at spazio Rossana Orlandi during Salone del Mobile.  The four new pieces are made from stainless steel, which is new for Bakker.  He hopes the objects will contribute to Henning Koppel's legacy.

Aldo Bakker's relationship with Georg Jensen started when he was paid a visit in Amsterdam by Rebecca Uth from the company.  "She wanted to talk about the plans for Georg Jensen and my possible role within it," Bakker says.

The timing was perfect so Bakker jumped on the opportunity and excitement started to build.  Most importantly, the union for Bakker made perfectly good sense:  "If you look at the designs of Henning Koppel, you'll see that there is a dialogue between our way of working," he says.   "The tension he created between abstraction, sensuality and the point where the object almost becomes a being is very attractive to me. I see him as much an image maker as a designer so I've tried to contribute, in my own way, to that legacy.  I really do hope that my way of working with shapes adds something to the DNA of the brand. I am showing a new consciousness of forms, a renewed awareness that good designs do not automatically conform to the expectations of the user, but also show people new possibilities that hopefully enrich their lives.”

The biggest hurdle for Bakker in the brand environment was the time pressure.  He is more used to an independent atmosphere where most of the pressure is self-inflicted.  "But for these objects I really needed to be a part of a program," Bakker says.

The four objects Bakker has made are all made in stainless steel and invite users to explore the flowing of water, oil, sugar and salt.  "The materials are all new for me and I loved that," says Bakker.  "They simply enriched me with more means of expression."
