Winde Rienstra and Gomes Esser

Over on the avant-garde side of fashion solar panels and wooden constructions were all part of Gomes Esser and Winde Rienstra's visions for the new season.

During the second LAB event at AIFW, haute-couture designer Winde Rienstra was the first to present her collection, according to many, one of the highlights of the week.

It was the contrast between simple, cream-coloured tanktops and amazing architectural creations which set the tone for Winde Rienstra's collection. The eco-friendly fashion designer aims to not only show her skill for 3-D design, but to actually visualize the energy we have around us through the clothing.

What appeared to be plywood structures somehow transformed into garments such as skirts, corsets and accessories. Hundreds of pieces of string span between the base structures, creating volume within the void.

Models were literally caged within the designs, some imitating the shape or form of a skirt or dress, others more like a harness around the body. In addition to the clean cut designs worn underneath, there was some interesting material research in the form of a basket-woven dress and a jacket echoing gold-tipped fish scales.

Design duo Aleyda Gomes and Denise Esser (Gomes Esser) took a more futuristic approach to fashion with their collection entitled 'The Perfection of Imperfection'. As models confidently strode down the catwalk wearing designs of (fake) fur and leather with metal details and headdress, it seemed as though viewers had been transported to an alien planet.

A powerful, driven woman full of passion, yet burdened by betrayal is the muse for Gomes Esser's latest collection. Inspired by the past, the designs are placed in the present with a strong futuristic focus. This approach is apparent in material choice, cut and even in the geometric patterns used. Bolero jackets, pleated high-waisted trousers and the use of solar panels were all popular themes within the collection.
