Where to buy Dutch design in Tokyo
Tokyo native Nahoko Washio works as a link between Dutch designers and the Japanese market. Her matchmaking service and PR consultancy keeps her in the know, here she shares some of the best places to buy Dutch design in the city.
hhstyle
Situated in trendy Harajyuku, HHstyle feels more like a design gallery or museum than shop. You'll find three floors of furniture, including Marcel Wanders' Knotted Chair, plus the chance to add another piece to your Hella Jongerius B-set.
Cïbone
Tokyo's trendiest, this shrine to interior design has supported Dutch design from the start. During the Japan Design Week, the exhibition Serious Mellow will showcase the work of Hella Jongerius, Piet Hein Eek and Moooi.
Souvenir From Tokyo
SFT is the museumshop of The National Art Center. But this is no ordinary museum shop selling the usual overpriced stationary and tacky t-shirts. Here you'll find underground and mainstream, elegant luxury and everyday kitsch. Run by Cïbone (see above), you'd expect nothing less. As the owners say, the cutting edge they present is 'a product of our ability to see beyond existing attitudes and create a new editorial process that reflects the imagination, energy and chaotic beauty that make up today's Tokyo'. Get treasure hunting!

Kakitsubata
You may mistake this small shop for a gallery at first glance. But the canalside location, peaceful setting and treasure trove of objects means that you are certain to spend hours in here. The shop has always had a strong bond with Dutch design, you'll find work by Hella Jongerius, Royal Tichelaar Makkum, Wieki Somers, Demakersvan and Christien Meindertsma plus many more.
