‘TM – City’ is a three-dimensional installation based on the work of graphic designer Richard Niessen (1972). It is modelled on the idea of the city, with its ground plan, layered complexity, architecture and logistical structure.

TM stands for ‘Typographic Masonry’. The exhibition includes sources of inspiration like the work of poster designer A.M. Cassandre, artist Eduardo Paolozzi and graphic designer Tadanori Yokoo. Niessen’s work typically includes many layers of typography, calligraphy and image ordered in a complex system that shows the influence of Byzantine and Middle Ages illumination and has no equivalent in Dutch design.

Niessen’s cooperation with Esther de Vries on the Stedelijk Museum Annual Report was chosen as one of the best presented books of 2006 and awarded an honorary diploma in Germany as one of the ‘most beautiful books in the world’. In 2004 he also worked with artist Jennifer Tee on the Evoleye-Lands-End catalogue, the first of several other cooperative projects with her, including designs for the council chamber of Amsterdam’s South-East Sub-Urban Council and a ground design for the square on the city’s Southern Axis business development.

Richard Niessen has also designed several typefaces, among them Tartan, File Sharing, Constellation and In Progress.
