Maurice Mentjens: objects and spaces
This winter Centre Céramique in Maastricht hosts an exhibition dedicated to one of The Netherlands' most well known interior designers, Maurice Mentjens.
A unicorn, fluorescent tube-lights that burst into a star, a Belgian potato chip, butterfly shoes and a quote from Shakespeare. Symbols, associations and references. Interior designer Maurice Mentjens likes to tell stories.
Packaged in various layers that refer to the site or use. For Mentjens, it's all about the context. And this winter, Centre Céramique in Maastricht will host an exhibition outlining the designer's philosophy and work to date.
Mentjens established his name with the interior of the Sirius Smart Shop Maastricht - designed as a workshop for alchemy, overwhelmed by hallucinatory lighting. The technological laboratory as a source of artificial ecstasy. It was the prelude for his continuous search for confronting contrasts within the everyday. Part of his inspiration can be traced to more philosophical matters like religion and spirituality. The domain par excellence where the metaphors of good and evil hide behind a veil of worldly art.
Since establishing his studio, his portfolio has extended to interiors for retail, hospitality, offices and exhibitions. 'Maurice Mentjens: objects and spaces' was designed by Mentjens himself. Read about shoe store Kymyka here and office interior Post-Panic here.
