Henriette Tilanus wins People’s Prize

After winning Lichting 2013 and being nominated for a H&M Design Award, Henriette Tilanus has proved her popularity once again, winning the H&M People’s Prize.

Design.nl was present when Henriëtte Tilanus’ graduation collection came down the runway exactly six months ago during Amsterdam Fashion Week as part of Lichting. There, she impressed the audience and professional judges with her fashion collection based on the life of Lady Edith Sitwell.

It was no surprise when the ArtEZ graduate was once again nominated for a design prize, this time during the now third edition of the H&M Design Award. The difference with this prize though, is that it has been awarded by the public.

Could it be that after years of searching for clean, minimal lines, subdued patterns and slim silhouettes, Tilanus and her peers are paving the way to a more outspoken sense of fashion? Her pieces feature layer upon layer of fabric, bold prints and even a jacket featuring plastic flowers made from found objects.

In an interview with Independent Fashion Daily she says it to be a typical generation thing: “The fact that all of the collections were outspoken […] is a reaction to fashion today.”

Whether or not Tilanus’ early victory is a hint toward her winning the grand prize is yet to be seen, but for now this bright young thing can look forward to an internship with rising fashion house Erdem.

The grand-prize winner will be announced on 28 January 2014
