Graphic Culture prizes
Two Graphic Culture prizes are to be awarded this year. It is the first time ever that two prizes have been awarded simultaneously. One of the prizes, awarded in the 'organisations' category, will go to the council of Eindhoven, while the other, awarded in the 'people' category, will go to bookbinder Gijs Wortel.
The Graphic Culture prizes are the most prestigious awards in the Dutch graphic design world. They always consist of a specially designed and printed certificate, and are awarded to people or organisations that have excelled in graphic culture in the Netherlands. The award is decided by BNO, the Dutch graphic design umbrella organisation, as well as the Graphic Culture Foundation, the Royal Union of Graphic Design Companies (KVGO) and paper wholesaler Proost en Brandt.
Eindhoven Council
The council of Eindhoven is getting the prize (including graphic design) because it has made design a key aspect of its policy, and for its energetic development and execution of the policy. Examples of this are the Eindhoven council supported the Dutch Design prizes, the Dutch Design Week and the Design Academy, as well as NL Design’s 'A Brand New Day', in which Eindhoven played a leading role.
Gijs Wortel
Gijs Wortel (1942) begun his working life as a bookbinder and was a lecturer in bookbinding between 1966 and 1989 at the LTS and MTS levels at the Amsterdam Graphics School. As a lecturer, he excelled through his enthusiasm for the craft of bookbinding, as well as the way he succeeded in communicating his knowledge and enthusiasm outside the school too.
