Dutch Design Week, Eindhoven, 18-26 October 2008.

Dutch Design Week, the biggest design event in the Dutch calendar, will take over the city of Eindhoven from 18-26 October 2008. Events will be spread out all over the city with the majority being held in the exhibition halls and grounds of Strijp-S, the former industrial terrain of Philips, and the larger exhibitions will be held in de Witte Dame building, Eindhoven University of Technology and Designhuis.

Over the next couple of weeks, we'll be giving you detailed event reviews, interviews and reports from Dutch Design Week. For a full program check the website. But for now, here's our pick of happenings to help you wade through the program. Enjoy!

Alberto Alessi, official opening address in Designhuis
18 October, 14,30pm

De Bloiendestad (The Blossoming City)
A creative sustainable city of the future featuring exhibitions, presentations, workshops, lectures and food and drinks. Participating groups include BNO, O2 Netherlands, Gulpener, Material Sense and many others.

Graduation Galleries 2008
An exhibition from the latest graduates of the Design Academy Eindhoven. The exhibition is designed by Piet Hein Eek and compiled by Li Edelkoort.

DDD | Duurzaam Innoveren
A spicy discussion afternoon and seminar focusing on Cradle to Cradle (C2C), Eco-design, reuse, sustainable product development, and corporate social responsibility.

De Smalle Haven
A diverse programme with fashion, design, food and music, in collaboration with Magazine CODE, Maarten Baas, La Bolleur, Design Express, Design Species, and many others.

Dutch Design Awards
Winners of the new-look Dutch Design Awards will be announced.

Eat Drink Design (inside)
Pop up restaurant furnished with pieces from local and international talents including Maarten Baptist, Joost van Bleiswijk, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Kiki van Eijk, Lotte van Laatum, Christien Meindertsma and Sylvain Willenz. Espresso and bubbles in the day and Dutch Design dinner by Sot-l’y-laisse in the evening.
Eat Drink Design (outside)
Pop up snack joint featuring seven different Signature Snacks which is a joint food design project between top designers and haute cuisine chefs.

Freeformfab presents digital design and fabrication
Lectures and presentations revolving around the developments in digital design and production, motion capture and rapid prototyping.

Onomatopee presents Lift-Off - The truth of basics

Modebelofte 2008
Selection of fashion graduates from Dutch academies.

Pecha Kucha
Wednesday 22 October

Platform21 = Hacking IKEA
Continuing its journey from FreeDesigndom, the hacked pieces will be now featured at Dutch Design Week.

A new mammoth-sized design gallery, shop and event space on the grounds of Strijp-S.

Talent 2008
An exhibition of recent European design graduates selected by Li Edelkoort

TAC - Temporary Art Centre

Temporary café, restaurant and late night-bar which features a 250m long bar made from waste material. The concept is an exploration of the differences in hospitality between the Netherlands and abroad. Check the program for concerts, lectures and DJ's.

Jo Meeesters
Concepts and products based on the key words of matter and traditional craftsmanship.

Developed on a polder farm in the Noordoostpolder, the project Veldwerk - Maarten Kolk, Nadine Sterk, and Lonny van Rijswijck show that besides an aesthetic value, design can also have a greater content-related layeredness and meaning.
