Wednesday 31 October
Today the international tradefair 100% Design Tokyo opened. This is the third year that this event has taken place in Japan. The Dutch stand 'Created in Holland' presents 10 Dutch designers and design labels, varying from furniture and textiles to ceramics and accessories.
It's clear to see that the Japanese public recognises the Dutch presentation. Immediately, from the opening of the fair, the stand is busy with lots of interested visitors. The potential Japanese business partners who we had already met at the opening reception with the Dutch ambassador also came by. The matchmaker for the project, Nahoko Washio, told us that the interest for Dutch design from Japanese companies went very smoothly this year; there was already a lot of positive interest. This was the result of last year's Dutch presentation.
The participating designers and labels were surprised at the enormous flow of visitors and professional interest in their products. With help from the matchmaker and translators available on the stand, many discussions about products and possible cooperation were had. There was also interest from other Asian countries, such as Korea.
As well as 100% Design Tokyo, there are many other events taking place in the city as part of Tokyo Designer's Week. The biggest presentation is Design Tide, which once again includes design from the Netherlands: Jurgen Bey, Simon Heijdens, Miriam van der Lubbe and Niels van Eijk. The opening was a busy happening with design, music and a great atmosphere.
Tonight there will be more openings and presentations, including the Dutch exhibition No Windmills, Cheese and Tulips. Also, Cibone, one of the leading design shops in Tokyo will show a large collection of Dutch and European design.
