'Bare bottom' dress by Dekkers to be acquired by Rijksmuseum
The 'Bare bottom' dress by lingerie designer Marlies Dekkers is to become part of the Rijksmuseum collection.
The new director of the Rijksmuseum, Wim Pijbes has announced that the first work he will acquire for the museum is the 'bare bottom' dress by Marlies Dekkers. Pijbes begins as director on 1 July, 2008.
The dress, from 1989, is closed at the front, but leaves the buttocks bare. According to Pijbes "This dress is, with all its apparent simplicity, an important exponent of Dutch culture. One strong, apparently simple idea which in one fell swoop produces a radically new image. The same as the Rietveld chair or the red-yellow-blue work by Mondriaan." The dress as well as sketches will go to the museum.
